Sant Pere de Galligants monastery, today home to the Archaeological Museum of Catalonia-Girona, is also one of the most notable examples of Catalan Romanesque architecture. It was founded in the 10th century and today we can see the church and the cloister built in the 12th century. The church has a basilica floor plan and several notable elements, including the central apse that presides imposingly over the interior and splendid sculpted capitals.
The rectangular-shaped cloister is noteworthy for the groups of five columns that replace the traditional central pillars in each gallery, endowing it with remarkable architectural lightness. The space is visually enhanced by sixty capitals that are richly-decorated with various themes.
